GN, editorial: State Leaders Must Agree on Budget Cuts

The full Legislature should return this month to Columbia to deal with a shortfall that’s almost certain to be at least 4 percent or $250 million. But before they reconvene, legislative leaders and Gov. Mark Sanford should meet and agree on what are likely to be painful budget cuts so those proposals can be quickly approved when the full General Assembly returns for the special session.

In the face of a growing budget crisis, political gamesmanship that can dominate regular legislative sessions must be set aside in favor of cooperation among the key players. The potential roadblock is not so much partisan differences among Republican and Democratic legislators but rather the tension that typically arises during sessions between GOP legislative leaders and Sanford.
